ABOUT THE BOOK

Does your teen struggle with feeling misunderstood? Do they tend to get upset easily or struggle to manage difficult thoughts and feelings like sadness, anger, frustration, or worry? Does it seem like they are always stressed?

They aren’t alone.

Many teens struggle to balance their emotions and manage stress. The good news is that their generation is keenly aware of the importance of mental health. Awareness is a great first step, but they also need solid skills to successfully navigate their complex world, be their best, and reach their goals.

This book can teach them those skills!

In this friendly guide, psychologist Melanie McNally offers effective tools to help teens cultivate emotional intelligence—the ability to identify and express their emotions in healthy ways. They’ll gain a greater understanding of the connection between their emotions and their behavior, learn how to stay calm during stressful or anxiety-provoking situations, and discover tips to help them manage conflict with their friends, family, teachers—or anyone in their life.

Teens will find foundational skills to help them:

  • Increase motivation

  • Practice emotional self-awareness

  • Identify their feelings

  • Manage their moods

  • Decrease their stress levels

  • Set authentic and attainable goals

Emotions are powerful things. By learning to understand and balance their own emotions, your teen will be empowered to take control of their goals, dreams, and mental well-being—now and into the future!

“In The Emotionally Intelligent Teen, Melanie McNally does what she does best, speaks to teens in their language with compassion and authority. The book's combination of information and narrative draws in the reader and offers a relatable mirror to what they may be going through or have witnessed in their own lives while offering tools for response that highlight self-awareness and mindfulness . This is a powerful resource for adolescents (and adults!) and one I plan to pass on to my own kids.”

Casey O'Roarty, M.Ed, parent coach, Positive Discipline Lead trainer, speaker, author, Host of The Joyful Courage Podcast

“I love how Melanie uses real-life examples to help teens understand emotional intelligence and how it can affect their daily lives. For example, she lays out so clearly the descriptions of all the different emotional skills and uses metaphors for mood and emotion so that both teens and adults can comprehend. This book should be foundational reading for any teenager before heading into adulthood. I can't wait to get the book into my own teenager's hands!”
